Hi my name is Carli and I
am a wife and a mumma and my pod full of peas are my gorgeous energetic three boys Micah, Eli and Josiah.
I love cooking wholefood and taking beautiful photos of it!
My wholefood journey began earlier this year when I was diagnosed with my third autoimmune disorder. I was aware at the time that I needed to make some big changes in my life and that my diet was one of those.
I was significantly lacking in energy and what I have learned is that when you feed yourself good food your body has the nutrients it needs to fuel you throughout the day. This is not rocket science but as a busy mum of three boys under five I often became too exhausted to worry about making nutritious meals for myself and would rather grab a quick jam sandwich or even worse snack in between lunch and tea without having a proper meal until tea time.
I previously worked as a Registered Nurse and my husband is a doctor so healthy eating should not be a foreign concept to us but what I am beginning to realize is that in our fast pace living our food is adjusted to be convenient and as a result often highly processed.
I have always been a fan of good quality, homegrown fruit and veg. Growing up on a farm in the Adelaide Hills I was blessed learn a lot from my dad, a farmer that loved gardening and grew a lot of his own fruit & vegetables. I remember many summer days of running to fill up the sweetcorn box that my dad would sell fresh cobs from. If he ever missed a year of selling we would have people knocking on our door asking when it was available. People recognized a difference in this sweet, juicy corn that could not be purchased at Coles.
I also have many fond memories of blackberry picking on our farm. My brother and sisters and I would pick buckets full that would be later made into jam and tarts. I remember summer afternoons my um and grandma would spend in the kitchen bottling up jars of tomato sauce made with fresh tomatoes picked from the garden. What a blessing it was to have such a great model and I think this has had a deep impact on my love for gardening and cooking.
Food is more than filling our bellies. It is about connecting with others and sharing our lives together. Hospitality is a love of mine. I get really excited about cooking for others and as a result dinners with family and friends happen very regularly in our household. My cooking has significantly changed this year. After seeing a naturapath for my autoimmune disorder I was inspired to make significant changes. My pantry had a make over, my garden is now flourishing and my energy has now significantly increased.
I have learnt as you begin to eat healthy food it becomes addictive and you no longer crave the foods you used to love (for me... salt and vinegar chips!)We still splurge occasionally and I have tried to be balanced with the changes I'm introducing. What is incredible are the changes that can happen to your taste buds in a 3 month period. I am shocked at the amount of sugar I taste in cereals and juice now that I never used to notice were there. Even in my baking, recipes that I used to make often I am halving the sugar now and still finding them on the sweet side! We because accustomed to this sweetness without actually having an understanding about how much sugar we are actually putting into our bodies.
I hope you enjoy this wholefood journey with me & I hope to inspire you along the way!
